This section explains the Cooper Run Test
Medical Science concludes that there is a very high correlation between the distance that an individual can cover in 12 minutes and the efficiency with which the body can use oxygen for running.
Cooper Run test technique
The Cooper 12 minute run test requires the person being tested to run or walk as far as possible in a 12 minute period. The objective of the test is to measure the maximum distance covered by the individual during the 12 minute period and is usually carried out on a running track by placing cones at various distances to enable measuring of the distance. A stopwatch is required for ensuring that the individual runs for the correct amount of time.
Interpreting the results of the Cooper Run test
The results of the Cooper 12 minute run test can vary depending upon the level of preparation of the individual apart from other factors such as motivation level, warming up and running technique. Please keep in mind that all individuals must get prior approval from a doctor before undertaking this test as it can be quite taxing on the body. The results of the test also vary on the basis of gender.
The Cooper aerobic fitness test can also be undertaken by people who cannot run, as well as people who would like to use a treadmill. If using a treadmill, it is advised to keep the incline at 1 degree to mimic actual running conditions.
